Mickey McMurtry: Lassiter High School

McMurtry was inducted into the Georgia Dugout Club Hall of Fame in 2008.

Mickey McMurtry helped establish Lassiter as a state power during his tenure. The longtime coach retired after the 2009 season with a 445-169 mark in 17 seasons.

He was inducted into the Georgia Dugout Club Hall of Fame in 2008.

McMurtry led the school to two state titles in 1999 and 2006. He made seven appearances in the finals and captured seven region crowns. His 1999 squad was voted national champions by Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball Magazine. They finished the season 35-2 and won 33 straight games.

During McMurtry’s tenure, the longtime coach worked tirelessly to transform the school’s baseball complex into one of the state’s top baseball venues. According to a column by John Bednarowski of the Marietta Daily Journal, “the facilities became McMurtry's passion. As they developed, he made sure there was never a tuft of grass out of place, the infield was always smooth and the bases and base lines extra white.”

McMurtry refused to take the credit.

"I did my part," McMurtry told the newspaper, "but it was the booster club, the parents and Guerry Baldwin and the East Cobb (Baseball) people. There were hundreds of people that had a hand in the facility. I was just the caretaker."
