Rob English: Brookwood High School

English was inducted into the Georgia Dugout Club Hall of Fame in 2014.

Rob English was a highly successful baseball coach at Briarcliff High School and Brookwood High School. Then he was just as successful as a baseball scout.

English coached at DeKalb County's Briarcliff High from 1970-1981 where he guided the program to a state runner-up finish in 1971. In 1981, he started the Brookwood program and guided the Broncos to a state championship in 1986. He finished with a 172-74 record in eight seasons at the school.

His overall coaching record is 360-164 and he averaged at least 18 wins per season.

He left high school coaching in 1991 and began scouting for the Atlanta Braves. He worked in that capacity from 1991-2001 and had a hand in signing Major Leaguers John Rocker and Adam Wainwright. In 1995, he earned a World Series ring with the Braves.

He followed up with a stint with the Boston Red Sox (2002-2012) where he earned three World Series rings.

He retired from scouting in 2012 but continued to work part time with the Red Sox. In 2014, he was inducted into the Professional Baseball Scouts Hall of Fame.

“It’s an honor,” English told the Gwinnett Daily Post before he was inducted into the Professional Baseball Scouts Hall of Fame. “The people chosen ahead of me, I’m honored to be in that group. … I’m like any other scout. Some of us get lucky and some don’t. You make a call and sometimes you see a kid with talent. I’ve missed on my share and I’ve been lucky enough to hit on a couple of them, too.”

English is also a member of the Gwinnett Sports Hall of Fame.

A native of Louisville, Ga., English was a standout prep athlete who played college baseball at Erskine.
