Richard Chumley: Northwest Whitfield High School
Chumley was inducted into the Georgia Dugout Club Hall of Fame in 2000.
Richard Chumley was Northwest Whitfield’s first baseball coach. The longtime coach retired in 2002 after a 27-year coaching career that included a state championship in 1983. Chumley finished with a 368-295 mark.
Chumley grew up in Northwest Georgia in Trenton where he was a pitcher on Dade County’s 1967 squad that finished second to Seminole County in the Georgia High School Association’s Class B playoffs. After college, Chumley took over at Northwest Whitfield and led the Bruins to three region titles and also coached the Northwest Georgia All-Stars three times.
According to the Dalton Daily Citizen, Chumley produced 10 future coaches and sent 50 Northwest Whitfield players to college.
“I know this, you can’t have a good program without good players and good coaches,” Chumley told the newspaper. “I’ve always been blessed with those two things.”
