Joe Harvey: Emanuel County Institute
Lewis was inducted into the Georgia Dugout Club Hall of Fame in 2010.
Joe Harvey touched the lives of countless students and players. He preferred to stay away from the spotlight. The longtime baseball coach at Emanuel County Institute (ECI) was inducted into the Georgia Dugout Club Hall of Fame in 2010.
The Monticello native who also served in the United States Navy, coached the first sustained baseball program at ECI in 1952. Harvey coached where he was needed -- he was an assistant football coach, men's basketball coach, B-Team basketball coach and head baseball coach. He coached ECI's baseball program from 1952-1987 and recorded more than 300 victories.
During the summers, Harvey often traveled back to Monticello and coached recreational baseball teams.
When the school didn't have a baseball field, Harvey worked to build one. The ECI baseball field was named "Harvey Field" in 1996 after the longtime coach.
Harvey never married. Shortly after retiring in 1987, he suffered two heart attacks and passed away in 1992.
