Steve Smith has been a longtime ambassador for baseball in the state of Georgia. He was inducted into the Georgia Dugout Club Hall of Fame in 2012.
After graduating from Georgia Southern College in 1975 where he was part of the baseball program under Ron Polk, Smith coached baseball at Effingham County High School for one season (1975-76) before taking over at Campbell High School in Smyrna in 1976.
He coached there until 1988 where he won more than 150 games. His resume included capturing the region title in 1982 and serving as Georgia Dugout Club President for six years.
Smith also began working as a scout for the Cincinnati Reds organization from 1987-1989. In 1989, he served as facility manager/director of instruction at Grand Slam USA and was an assistant baseball coach at Southern Tech under the legendary Charlie Lumsden. In 1990, he also worked as a part-time scout with the Kansas City Royals until joining the Astros in 1996.
In 1999, he became Director of Operations at Georgia under Polk. Smith has also scouted for the New York Mets and Milwaukee.
