Jerry Queen: Marist School

Queen was inducted into the Georgia Dugout Club Hall of Fame in 2007.

Jerry Queen helped Marist win five state baseball championships during his tenure as the head baseball coach at the Atlanta private school. He was inducted into the Georgia Dugout Club Hall of Fame in 2007.

Two teams that Queen coached at Marist finished as state runner-up.

A native of Lincolnton, N.C., he contracted polio at age four and was a patient at the Shriner’s Hospital in Greenville, S.C. for more than 10 years. He graduated from North Carolina State in 1966 and later received an MS degree from Atlanta University in 1974.

During his 20 seasons at Marist, Queen taught math, coached baseball, was an assistant football coach and the Director of Athletics. He compiled a 350-125 record from 1970-1989.

The Atlanta Dugout Club, Braves 400 Club and the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association named Queen their Coach of the Year in 1977, 1978, 1981, 1983, 1984, 1985 and 1988. He was also nominated for National Coach of the Year three times (1977, 1984 and 1988).

He passed away on Jan. 21, 2015.

Queen had 27 former players play college baseball and five played professionally. The baseball field at Marist is named “Jerry Queen Field” in his honor.

Queen’s love for working with kids and baseball were epitomized in a personal statement that was printed in his obituary in The Daily Advertiser in LaFayette, La.

“My life was set in 1941, when a man and woman were married on home plate in a little mill town ball park in North Carolina. Three years later, I was born. Baseball was thick in my blood before I had veins. I hope to leave this world the same way."
