Rob Williams: Lee County High School

Williams was inducted into the Georgia Dugout Club Hall of Fame in 2009.

Rob Williams helped put Lee County High School baseball on the map during his 24 seasons of leading the Trojans baseball program. He was inducted into the Georgia Dugout Club Hall of Fame in 2009.

Williams guided Lee County baseball to a pair of state runner-up finishes (2005 and 1990), three appearances in the state semifinals and 14 region championships before he announced his retirement at the end of the 2013 season.

He continued to be involved as the athletic director until he officially walked away in June of 2016.

Williams sent a wealth of players to college. One of those was All-Star Buster Posey who spent most of his time as catcher of the San Francisco Giants.

The longtime coach graduated from Ware County where he played football and baseball. After high school, he played baseball at Valdosta State before landing his first job as an assistant coach at Moultrie High School in 1976. He coached football and was an assistant to baseball coach Jerry Croft, who was inducted into the Georgia Dugout Hall of Fame in 2012.

Williams stayed in Moultrie (which later became Colquitt County High School) until 1984 when he left for a similar role at Lee County. He was an assistant baseball coach under Butch Watts before taking over in 1989. In his first four seasons, Williams won more than 100 games and four region titles. He built his teams around strong pitching and solid defense.

“My father taught me that it doesn’t take any ability to hustle,” Williams told In the Game Magazine in a 2014 interview. “You run out every play and play hard. If we could pitch and play defense, we wouldn’t have to be an offensive juggernaut. We had some teams that scored a lot of runs, but we didn’t worry about the long ball. We just wanted to put the ball in play and put pressure on our opponent’s defense.”
