Greg Goodwin: Redan High School

Goodwin was inducted into the Georgia Dugout Club Hall of Fame in 2000.

Greg Goodwin helped put Redan High School baseball on the map in Georgia. The longtime coach who later served as the school’s principal was inducted into the Georgia Dugout Club Hall of Fame in 2000. He was the first African-American coach to be inducted and at the time, he was the youngest to be inducted.

Goodwin coached at Redan from 1988 to 1999 and he finished with a career coaching mark of 228-96. During his tenure, he was recognized as the DeKalb County Coach of the year four times (1990, 1994, 1996, 1998) as well as the Dekalb County Coach of the Decade (1999).

While at Redan, the Raiders won three region championships and earned three trips to the state playoffs. Goodwin led the Raiders to five 20-win seasons.

During his tenure, he sent several to college and into the professional ranks. Three of his former players – Brandon Phillips, Domonic Brown and Chris Nelson – played in the majors.

Since his retirement in 1999, Goodwin has stayed close to the game. He served as a scout for the Los Angeles Dodgers and when the school won the state baseball championship in 2013, coach Marvin Pruitt (also a Georgia Dugout Club Hall of Fame member) credited Goodwin for being a part of the team.
